Life at our MissionNative Americans and Missions
The only tribe that was at the Santa Barbara mission was the Chumash. There, they learned Spanish. Men at the Santa Barbara mission had jobs like hunting for deer and fishing while women gathered acorns, wild herbs, roots, and berries. 600 grapevines, and 100 fruit trees were grown. They also planted corn, wheat, and raised sheep. The extra clothes they made were traded and sold. Life at the mission was difficult. There wasn’t much food to support the fathers and the Native Americans. It took many years for the Mission to plant crops and cattle. In the morning, they would eat breakfast late, and have early events and masses. Breakfast was for one hour, after prayer. Well, the Missions ruined the Native Americans’ religion. Native Americans had their own religions and ways of life but the missions were supposed to make them christian, which ruined their religion. Also, they gave them, different clothes, and other things that were different than their usual things. Lastly, they couldn't be outdoors like like they use to. |
