The Costanoan Indians lived at San Francisco de Asis. They wove blankets and made pottery. The mission supplied a lot of the blankets for the nearby presidio. It was also a shipping center for the Europeans. Is the mission still standing? The mission is still standing but it isn’t used for anything but a tourist attraction. The mission is currently free to tours. What did the tribes trade and/or grow? There was no good soil or space for growing crops, but the Indians traded for hides and tallow. How were the Natives treated? The Native Americans were treated fairly,but lots of them died because of illness. The Spaniards were mostly friendly because they wanted to expand christianity. Did the Missions help or hurt the Natives? The Missions hurt the Native Americans. They tried to alter the Natives’ traditions to believing in christianity, and their diseases caused thousands to die. |
