Life at our MissionThe Rumsen tribelet and Esselen people joined this mission and some others. The mission’s livestock was small. They had 2,100 cattle and 3,300 sheep. The most they had for livestock was in the first decade of the 19th century when the herd was from 8,000 to 10,000.They also grew corn, beans, wheat and lentils.
The Native Americans that joined the mission had to work there forever. Any Native American that left and went back to their village was hunted down by order of father Serra and brought back. They were beaten and put into confinement for a period of time. Some of the Native Americans were blacksmiths, shepherds, plowmen, cattle herders and carpenters. The Native American’s way of life was destroyed when they joined the mission. They were slaves for the rest of their lives and didn’t get to celebrate or do any rituals they used to have. |
